Big Girls Don’t Cry

A happy update to this page: Big Girls Don’t Cry will be included in Fuck the Patriarchy,  a zine published by Fail Better, in Glasgow, Scotland. Fail Better hosted a couple of events in Glasgow this week (October, 2013) focused on exploring feminism, called Reclaiming the F-Word.

In February, 2012, I visited an art exhibit themed around women and body image. The following morning, on a cool, rainy run, this poem (! not my usual) arrived.

The bird-legged man doesn’t like her hips,

doesn’t like the way her hips sway

as she swishes past him

down that skinny

Carolina dirt road.

The bird-legged man doesn’t like her rump,

doesn’t like the way her rump rises,

one side, ripe and round,

and then the other, dust kicking up

behind her

in those Pine woods.

The bird legged man clucks disapproval

as she walks by, leaves him

pecking for scraps

in the hard-packed, sun-baked, barren red clay.
